A 55-minute flight from Tahiti
Located on the pristine atoll of Mataiva in the Tuamotu Archipelago of French Polynesia, Pension Ariiheevai (meaning "the queen who glides on the water") was a place we had heard a lot about. With my birthday approaching (they seem to come more often as we get older), my partner and I decided to celebrate it there. We had been promised authenticity , comfort , and a complete change of scenery . We certainly weren't disappointed. Situated on the edge of the lagoon , just a few minutes from the airport, this family-run guesthouse combines Polynesian hospitality , a paradisiacal setting , and local cuisine . In this article, we offer a complete overview of Pension Ariiheevai, its advantages, its services, and the activities to discover on the atoll.

2 planes per week
An ideal location
Pension Ariiheevai is located in the village of Pahua , on the Mataiva atoll . This atoll is renowned for its unique lagoon , composed of nine natural compartments , which is also what gave it its name: Mataiva (Mata = eyes and iva = 9).
What we appreciated most upon arriving at the airport was the warm welcome from the guesthouse staff, complete with traditional flower leis . Just a five-minute drive later, we were settled in. We'd barely put down our suitcases before being invited to refresh ourselves with a glass of fruit juice . Then we discovered the direct access to the beach , with bungalows right on the lagoon offering breathtaking views of the turquoise water. Very quickly, we felt the peaceful atmosphere of Mataiva , quite different from that of Rangiroa or Fakarava , as the less frequented atoll allowed us to enjoy an intimate and serene stay.
Comfortable accommodations
The guesthouse offers 10 fully equipped , air-conditioned bungalows , each with a small private terrace . Furthermore, each bungalow also has a private bathroom with linens and soap provided (which is not always the case in Polynesia), guaranteeing comfort and privacy.
For those who wish to stay connected, free internet access is available , allowing you to share your experiences while fully enjoying the natural surroundings. This connection is only available within a radius of about twenty meters around the office. Therefore, part of the restaurant is covered, but many bungalows are not. However, this Wi-Fi proved more than sufficient for our needs.
Finally, with a total capacity of 58 people , the establishment maintains a friendly and family atmosphere , ideal for a warm and authentic stay.

We eat local food and it's a treat!
Fish, but not only that…
Pension Ariiheevai is also renowned for its refined , home-style cuisine , where local produce takes center stage: fresh fish , shellfish , chicken , spring rolls , samosas , and fresh vegetables form the basis of the meals. These ingredients are elevated through traditional Polynesian recipes such as raw fish in coconut milk , grilled fish with delicious sauces , or well-known dishes like tuna carpaccio . Importantly, ciguatera , the poisoning that can be contracted from eating lagoon fish, is not present in Mataiva . We were therefore able to fully enjoy our stay.
I loved
Personally, I truly enjoyed the fresh fruit , delicious firi firi , and flavorful scrambled eggs at breakfast , which set the tone for energetic days. I also savored the chicken chow mein . As for the various types of fish served at each meal, they added a touch of freshness and Polynesian authenticity . Furthermore, what a pleasure it was to eat from a coconut leaf plate that I had made myself that morning before leaving!

Friendly atmosphere
But beyond the flavors, the convivial atmosphere of the meals , often shared between travelers and locals, promotes exchanges and creates a warm atmosphere that makes each moment at the table unique and memorable.

Activities offered on the atoll and its lagoon
A stay at Pension Ariiheevai is a true invitation to fully experience the richness of Mataiva. Daily excursions are organized and included in the price of your stay.
Lagoon excursions
They allow you to discover the different sections of the lagoon , true natural gems with infinite nuances. Snorkeling enthusiasts will marvel at the diversity of tropical fish and the beauty of the corals.
Land excursions
For those who prefer dry land, 4x4 excursions offer the opportunity to explore the motu (islets) connected by roads and bridges, and to immerse oneself in still-wild landscapes. However, those sensitive to mosquito bites and voracious sandflies should be sure to bring their favorite natural repellent, otherwise… Personally, with my partner by my side, I was particularly well protected 😉
Visits to artisan shops
Finally, the cultural encounters offer a glimpse into local life, Polynesian crafts and traditions , providing an authentic immersion into the heart of the island's culture. Visiting two passionate artisans, we had the pleasure of leaving with magnificent, unique creations made with sparkling pearls , shimmering mother-of-pearl , and shells gathered on the atoll. Moreover, considering the prices usually found in Tahiti, we found these prices particularly attractive.
But we absolutely had to return to Mataiva very soon. The SPF (South Pacific Convergence Zone) had decided to settle over a large part of French Polynesia (only the Marquesas Islands, as is so often the case at this time of year, were spared), bringing very bad weather with heavy downpours and strong winds . Despite these conditions, the land-based activities on the extensive program continued, and they still allowed us to get to know this enchanting atoll.
Activities at the guesthouse
At Pension Ariiheevai, there's no shortage of leisure activities! In addition to the games ou sports like flechette, the ping-pong, the billiards, the baby foot or bowling, the hosts can spend some time in front of the TV or even participate in art workshopsWe learn about it there.the art of braiding to make pretty crowns or in traditional plates, as well as the making of Shell jewelry, true treasures inspired by Polynesian nature. Furthermore, Bicycle and kayaks are available for idyllic walks, both on land and on the lagoon. However, during this rainy stay, we regretted theabsence of board games to occupy our free time in a friendly way.
Those who know me well will suspect that I've mainly devoted myself to pétanque . But I learned the hard way that when you stop training, past titles as Var or Polynesian champion aren't enough to compete with the brilliant local specialists . A few good thrashings ensued, but what a joy it was to play boules again with these champions, so exceptionally skilled and always ready to laugh and have fun.

End of stay
The stay at Pension Ariiheevai concludes in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. On the last evening, a barbecue and drinks are organized, providing an opportunity for guests and hosts to share a convivial moment. Then, on the morning of departure, each guest receives a typically Polynesian token of appreciation: flower leis for everyone , accompanied by hats for the men and crowns for the women . In this way, the experience ends on a festive and traditional note, leaving everyone with an unforgettable memory of their time in Mataiva.

Thank you for this extremely detailed article, Mataiva. When were you there to experience such unpredictable weather?
Hi Laeticia 😎 It was early December. Météo France Polynésie française had predicted this deterioration in the weather, but I couldn't change my birthday date 😉
