Mataiva, a diamond in the Tuamotu

5 days at the Ariiheevai guesthouse in Mataiva

A 55-minute flight from Tahiti

Located on the unspoiled atoll of Mataïva, in aTuamotu Archipelago in French Polynesia, Ariiheevai Guesthouse (translate "the queen who glides on water") is an address we had heard a lot about. With my birthday coming up (they seem to come more often as you get older), my partner and I decided to celebrate it there. We had been promised authenticity, comfort et sceneryIt must be said that we were not disappointed. Located in lagoon edgeLocated just minutes from the airport, this family-run guesthouse combines Polynesian hospitality, heavenly setting et local gastronomyIn this article, we offer a complete presentation of Pension Ariiheevai, its advantages, its services and the activities to discover on the atoll.

2 planes per week

From Tahiti, Mataiva is only accessible twice a week, with a flight on Sunday and another one Thursday. It is Air Tahiti which provides this connection (Air Moana does not yet offer this destination). In fact, this particular schedule offers two possible stays: leaving on SundayThis allows for a longer immersion in the heart of the atoll, giving you time to savor its turquoise lagoons and peaceful atmosphere. However, choose ThursdayIt's about opting for a shorter but equally intense getaway, ideal for a quick and refreshing break.

An ideal location

The Ariiheevai Guesthouse is located in the village of Robbery, on the atoll of MataïvaThis atoll is renowned for its unique lagooncomposed of nine natural compartments, which is also where it got its name: Mataiva (Mata = eyes and iva = 9).

And what we appreciated most upon arriving at the airport was, first and foremost...reception of the pension staff with the traditional flower necklacesAnd in just a five-minute drive, we were already settled in. We'd barely put down our suitcases when we were invited to refresh ourselves with a glass of JuiceThen we discovered theDirect access to the beach, with bungalows in lagoon edge offering a breathtaking view of the turquoise water. And very quickly, we felt thepeaceful atmosphere of Mataiva, quite different from that of Rangiroa ou Fakarava, since the less frequented atoll allowed us to experience a stay intimate et serene.

This connection is only available in one radius of about twenty meters around the office. As a result, part of the restaurant is covered, but many bungalows are not. But this WiFi proved to be more than enough for our needs.

Finally, with a total capacity of 58 peoplethe establishment retains a friendly atmosphere et created, ideal for a warm stay et GENUINE.

We eat local food and it's a treat!

Fish, but not only that…

The Ariiheevai Guesthouse is also renowned for its fine cuisine et createdwhere local products play a central role: fresh fish, shellfish, chicken, nems, samosas et fresh vegetables These ingredients form the basis of meals. They are enhanced through traditional Polynesian recipes such as the raw fish in coconut milk grilled fish accompanied by delicious sauces, or even well-known dishes like the tuna carpaccioImportantly, the ciguatera, poisoning that can be contracted by eating lagoon fish is not present in MataivaWe therefore took full advantage of it.

I loved

As for me, I really enjoyed the breakfasts fresh fruits  delicious firi firi and tasty scrambled eggswhich set the tone for days full of energy. I also thoroughly enjoyed the Chicken chow meinAs for the different varieties of fish served at every meal, they added a touch of freshness andPolynesian authenticityFurthermore, what a pleasure it is to eat from a plate made of... coconut leaves which I had made myself that morning before leaving!

Land excursions

For those who prefer dry land, there are... 4x4 excursions offer the opportunity toexplore the motu connected by roads and bridges, and to immerse oneself in still wild landscapes. On the other hand, those who are sensitive to mosquito bites and voracious bones They won't forget to bring their favorite natural sunscreen, otherwise… Personally, with my partner by my side, I was particularly well protected 😉

Visits to artisan shops

Finally, cultural meetings open a window onto local life, thecrafts and Polynesian traditions, for an authentic immersion into the heart of the island's culture. By visiting two passionate artisans, we had the pleasure of leaving with some magnificent unique creations, made with sparkling pearls, shimmering mother-of-pearl and Team shellfish collected on the atoll. Moreover, considering the prices usually found in Tahiti, we found these prices particularly attractive.

But we absolutely must return to Mataiva very soon. Because the ZCPSThe South Pacific Convergence Zone (SPCC) had decided to settle over a large part of Polynesian territory (only the Marquesas Islands, as is very often the case at this time of year, were spared), bringing very bad weather with a lot ofrain and strong windsDespite these conditions, the land activities were kept on the rich program and they still allowed us to get to know this enchanting atoll.

Activities at the guesthouse

At Pension Ariiheevai, there's no shortage of leisure activities! In addition to the games ou sports like flechette, ping-pong, billiards, baby foot or bowling, the hosts can spend some time in front of the TV or even participate in art workshopsWe learn about it there.the art of braiding to make pretty crowns to traditional plates, as well as the making of Shell jewelry, true treasures inspired by Polynesian nature. Furthermore, Bicycle and Team kayaks are available for idyllic walks, both on land and on the lagoon. However, during this rainy stay, we regretted theabsence of board games to occupy our free time in a friendly way.

Otherwise, those who know me well suspect that I have essentially devoted myself to the bowlingBut I learned the hard way that when you stop training, past titles as Var or Polynesian champion are not enough to compete with the brilliant local specialists. A few good thrashings what followed but what happiness to retouch the balls with these champions, of exceptional skill and always ready to laugh and have fun.
