Umu tī, fire walking, July 2 at 18 p.m. at Mahana Park
Le Umu tī is an ancestral Polynesian ritual also known as walk on fire. It marks the beginning of the festivities of Heiva i Tahiti and symbolizes the purification of body and mind.
This rite consists of walking barefoot on white-hot volcanic stones in a pit carefully prepared by a tahua (Tahitian priest). In the past, this ceremony was linked to the food preservation : if the tahu'a passed through the oven without burning, it was a sign that the gods would guarantee the preservation of the food reserves.
Today, Umu tī remains a spectacular and spiritual event, where the participants, after a period of preparation and meditation, face the burning stones under the captivated gaze of the public. I specify for the courageous ou reckless that they can participate, if they wish, in this warm stroll...
