Mobydick Tahiti, the ocean in a different way
What I experienced at sea with a team that truly respects the ocean
I arrived at the Aquatika marina early in the morning, around 7 a.m., this quiet little port in Paea that I already love for its peaceful atmosphere. No frills, no reception area: you go straight to the boat. And from the very first moments, I understood that Mobydick Tahiti wasn't just another service provider. Here, everything exudes simplicity , passion , and above all, respect for the sea .
The Stenella boat , 28 feet, built in Fenua, was peacefully waiting for its adventurers, ready to head towards an area that I love: Paea , the Mara'a point , Papara … a corner of the west coast still preserved, far from the crowds, where the sea tells stories to those who take the time to listen to it.
A team that lives by the ocean
On board, I met up with Isabelle and Vaima . Two different personalities, but one thing in common: they love the sea, deeply, sincerely.
Isabelle has a calm voice, experience, and a knack for teaching. She talks about whales like you would talk about old friends. Vaima is energy, a smile, a pilot who reads the sea like others read an open book. Together, they embody gentleness and serenity, creating an atmosphere so smooth that the morning flies by without you even noticing.
With them, you don't just "consume" a trip at sea. You experience it.
Whale watching: that moment when time stands still
The 7:15 am departure
We set off at 7:15 a.m. , when the light is still soft and the sea hasn't yet decided to get rough. The area was calm, almost silent, and only the dolphins came to greet us. Always a pleasure to see them, of course, but it wasn't that special thrill you hope for when you go on a whale watching trip.
Memories of my first Mobydick ride
And naturally, watching them play around the bow, I thought back to my first outing with Mobydick , almost two years ago. That day, we had the incredible luck to come across a singing male . A giant lying motionless in the blue, as if suspended between two worlds.
When we entered the water, his songs , truly melancholic melodies , crossed the ocean… and our hearts . A deep, almost primal vibration that shakes you from within. We all looked at each other, mouths open behind our masks, unable to utter a word. It was powerful . Raw. Unforgettable.
Today, no giant
This morning, the sea offered no whales. No distant spout, no dark back breaking the surface. Just the silence of the open ocean, and dolphins as companions.
But it's important to note that we 're at the very beginning of the season , and this year, the start is particularly slow on all the islands . The season even seems delayed , perhaps due to El Super Niño , or changes in their feeding grounds that are keeping them offshore for longer.
In short, it's not easy this year, for tourists as well as for all the operators in French Polynesia . The giants are becoming rarer, it's true… but there are also those days when, despite everything, several of them appear and offer us truly magical moments . So Mobydick remains there, patient, attentive, ready for every encounter, even the unexpected, even the late ones.
Swimming in the turquoise lagoon
But Fenua has its own unique way of making up for lost time. On the way back, the lagoon offered us a suspended moment: a warm, clear turquoise bath where everyone let go. A luminous, simple, almost unreal interlude. No whales this time, but a moment of pure bliss, and sometimes that's all it takes to make the outing truly magical.
An outing without whales, but not without magic.
That's what I love about Mobydick: this way of experiencing the sea as it comes , without forcing, without rushing, without making promises. We observe, we respect, we adapt. And each outing becomes a different story, sometimes spectacular, sometimes gentle, but always true.

Diving: rediscovering the feeling of being tiny in a vast world
Another day, I tried their diving trip. Again in a small group, again in that area I love so much. The CRESSI equipment is immaculate , clean , disinfected , and well-maintained. You can tell they're serious about their work.
Underwater, the west coast reveals its colors: the drop-offs, the curious fish , the turtles that swim by as if they had a rendezvous somewhere else. And that feeling I love: the silence , the real silence, the kind that puts you in your place.
Mobydick Tahiti isn't trying to dazzle you. They show you what the sea has to offer. And that's more than enough.
Snorkeling: Polynesia as we dream of it
Between November and July, Mobydick Tahiti offers snorkeling trips. I went one morning when the sea was like glass. We slipped into the water, and immediately, life was there: fish , turtles , sometimes dolphins that come to play at a distance.
What I love about these outings is that you never feel rushed. You take your time. You look around. You breathe. You let yourself be carried away.
In addition, Mobydick has the chance to explore two superb snorkeling spots : Turtle Point and the Mara'a Aquarium .
On the first one, the coral is bursting with health, teeming with a multitude of fish, including some fifteen species of butterflyfish , an undeniable sign of a reef in excellent condition. And of course, hawksbill turtles are regular visitors, always so graceful.
The second spot, shallower , offers an equally magical atmosphere: coral everywhere, schools of fish swimming around us, and that turquoise light that gives the impression of swimming in a natural aquarium. Sailing towards this small pool of white sand dotted with coral , we also pass through an area where we can observe green turtles , attracted by the nearby seagrass beds.
Sunset aperitif: the west coast in its most beautiful light
At 16pm , I boarded for their sunset excursion. I thought I knew the sunsets of Paea. I was wrong.
From the boat, Moorea appears like a shadow puppet. The light turns golden, then pink, then violet. We chat, we laugh, we savor the moment. It's simple, but it's beautiful. And sometimes, that's all we ask for.

This was my second time with Isa and her team, and I'll definitely go back. Because some experiences are worth repeating. And this is one of them.
