🐾 PLUM is a key pillar for animal protection in French Polynesia
The PLUM association (Protection, Struggle, Emergency, Abuse) has become, in just a few years, one of the most important players in animal protection in French Polynesia. In a territory where stray dogs, abandonment, and veterinary difficulties pose a daily challenge, PLUM plays a crucial role: rescuing, caring for, educating, supporting… and above all, bringing about lasting change in the relationship between humans and animals .
This article explains what the association is for , how it works , and why its actions are beneficial both for adopters and for the entire territory .
🐕🦺 1. PLUM: an association born out of a permanent emergency
French Polynesia has long faced a complex problem:
dog overpopulation
frequent abandonments
stray dogs in a pack
road accidents
untreated diseases
lack of veterinary resources
low awareness of sterilization
Faced with this reality, a group of passionate volunteers created PLUM , with a simple but immense mission: to protect vulnerable animals and reduce animal suffering in the territory .
Today, PLUM is recognized for its efficiency, responsiveness and daily commitment in the field.

❤️ 2. PLUM's main missions
a) Rescue and take in animals in distress
Each week, the association intervenes to:
rescue abandoned puppies
rescuing injured dogs
taking care of abused animals
getting dogs out of dangerous situations (roads, vacant lots, industrial areas…)
These rescues are often carried out in emergencies , thanks to a network of volunteers and foster families.
b) Veterinary care and rehabilitation
Once collected, the animals are:
identified
treated
vaccinated
sterilized
sometimes surgery (fractures, infections, tumors…)
PLUM works with partner veterinarians, but costs remain very high. Every adoption or donation helps fund the care of future animals.
c) Local and international adoptions
The association organizes:
some adoptions in Tahiti
some adoptions to the metropolis
some adoptions to the United States or Canada depending on the possibilities
For international departures, PLUM manages:
administrative procedures
mandatory care
veterinary certificates
host families awaiting flight
the “flight volunteers” (passengers who agree to accompany a dog, see chapter 7)
It's a colossal undertaking, but one that allows hundreds of dogs to have a new life.
d) Awareness and education
PLUM regularly carries out actions to:
encourage the sterilization
explain the responsibilities of a landlord
combating abandonment
inform about diseases (ticks, scabies, parvovirus…)
promote adoption rather than purchase
This educational dimension is essential for changing behaviors in the long term.
Forgotten Companion
🏡 3. How does the association work?
a) A 100% volunteer team
PLUM is based on:
field volunteers
foster families
adoption coordinators
veterinary case managers
fundraising organizers
No one is paid a salary: every euro raised goes directly to the animals .
b) Foster families: the heart of the system
Since there is no PLUM shelter, the animals are placed:
in temporary foster families
sometimes in partner guesthouses
These families play a crucial role:
they socialize the dogs
feed them
they care for them
prepare them for adoption
Without them, the association could not function.
c) Donations: the only source of funding
PLUM survives thanks to:
donations from individuals
sponsorships
collections
solidarity sales
adoption fees
Each veterinary intervention is expensive, and the needs are constant.
Lost friendship
🌍 4. Why is PLUM essential for French Polynesia?
a) Reduce animal suffering
By rescuing, caring for, and sterilizing, PLUM directly contributes to reducing:
stray dogs
diseases
the wounds
acts of mistreatment
It's a visible, concrete, daily impact.
b) Improve public safety
Stray dogs can cause:
road accidents
bites
livestock attacks
nuisances in the neighborhoods
By reducing their number, PLUM contributes to a safer territory .
c) Enhance the image of Fenua
For tourists, seeing injured or abandoned dogs can be shocking. PLUM's actions contribute to:
improve the country's image
enhance tourist appeal
to demonstrate a responsible and supportive territory
d) Supporting municipalities and public services
Municipalities don't always have the resources to manage stray dogs. PLUM provides:
logistical support
an expertise
a rapid response capability
It's a win-win partnership for the entire region.
Abandoned life
🐶 5. Why is adopting via PLUM a valuable act?
a) You save a life
Each adoption frees up a space for another dog in distress. It's a concrete, immediate action that changes everything.
b) You adopt a well-cared-for and monitored dog
PLUM guarantees:
identification
vaccination
sterilization
preliminary care
post-adoption follow-up
Adopters are never alone.
c) You support a local cause
Adopting via PLUM means:
supporting volunteers
financing healthcare
participate in the reduction of stray dogs
It is an act of civic duty as much as an act of love.
Solitude in the sun
❓6. How to help without adopting?
Not everyone can adopt a dog, but there is valuable and often overlooked help available: registering a dog in your name for a trip in the hold All you have to do is give PLUM its its identity and its flight numberIn practical terms, the person has nothing else to do She doesn't have to take care of the dog at departure, during the flight, or upon arrival. The PLUM association handles all the arrangements, and the The adoptive family picks up the dog directly from the airport. This simple gesture allows an animal to begin its new life in mainland France, where a family awaits to welcome it. A small action for you… but a huge change for the animal.

In short: PLUM, an indispensable player for Fenua
The PLUM association is much more than a virtual refuge: it is a human network , a force on the ground , a hope for hundreds of animals , and a valuable ally for French Polynesia .
Thanks to its volunteers , foster families and adopters , PLUM transforms lives every day. The lives of the dogs , but also the lives of the humans who welcome them.
