PK in Tahiti: A unique orientation system
Kilometer points (PK) are landmarks used for locate a point along a transport route. In Tahiti, the PK 0 main is located at the Papeete Cathedral. This system allows orient oneself in the main islands where traditional addresses are less effective due to the particular geography of the islands.

Practical use
The PKs are materialized by kilometer markers placed every kilometer along the roads. They are used for give directions and locate addresses, often in combination with indications such as “sea side” ou “mountain side”, which indicate on which side of the road the destination is located. Each kilometer is counted from the PK 0 in the direction of the west and ballast up to Look at it, which constitutes the PK 60 by Western coast and PK 53 by East Coast.
A system adapted to local geography
Tahiti's unique geography made the adoption of such a system necessary. For example, the Tahiti peninsula, called “Tahiti Iti” in Tahitian, also uses PK, With the Taravao Fort as zero point. So there are 2 PK 0 in Tahiti. This shows how the PK system adapts to the different configurations of the islands.
Impact on daily life
PKs influence daily life in Tahiti, including how people give directions and receive mail. Residents often have two addresses: a postcard for their PO box and a geographic based on the PK. Indeed, in Tahiti you don't receive your mail in a mailbox in front of your house or in the lobby of your building. Tahitians travel to Fare Rata, the local post office, where thousands of post office boxes are concentrated.
PK in Polynesia
The PK system is used not only in Tahiti but also in other main islands of French Polynesia, where each main town has its own PK 0This is the case, for example, for the Vaiare quay which is PK 0 of Moorea. In the same way, Paid and the PK 0 of the island of Raiatea et Vaitape that of Bora Bora.
Ultimately
The PK system in Tahiti is a fascinating example of local adaptation to unique geographical challenges. It reflects ingenuity residents and their capacity to develop practical solutions that facilitate navigation and communication within their communities. And there you have it! Now you have all the “maps” in hand to find your way and easily reach your destination during your next trip to French Polynesia. By the way, how about a little sunset aperitif one of these days at PK 18 on the sea side? 😉
