History, heritage and memory of a kingdom that shaped Tahiti
The Pomare dynasty occupies a central place in the history of Tahiti and French Polynesia. Through political alliances, social transformations, cultural resistance, and complex relationships with European powers, the Pomares left their mark on more than a century of the political and symbolic life of the islands. Their legacy, still visible today, continues to nourish the collective memory, family stories, and cultural identity of the country.
This article traces the birth of the dynasty , the journey of the five kings and Queen Pomare IV, their works , their relations with the population , as well as the little-known aspects that shed light on their role in the history of Tahiti.
1. Birth of the Pomare dynasty: a power forged in alliances and conflicts
The Pomare dynasty originated in the late 18th century , amidst a period of political and cultural upheaval. Tahitian chiefdoms, organized around aristocratic lineages (ari'i), vied for power. It was within this volatile landscape that Tu , the future Pomare I, managed to consolidate his authority.
A name full of meaning
The name Pomare appeared around 1790. It is thought to be linked to a respiratory illness that caused bouts of nocturnal coughing ("po" = night, "mare" = cough). This nickname became a dynastic name, symbolizing the resilience and uniqueness of the lineage.
A power supported by European alliances
The first contacts with European navigators , followed by the arrival of British missionaries from the London Missionary Society, played a decisive role. The Pomare quickly understood the strategic importance of these relationships: weapons, writing, religion, trade, new forms of governance.
The dynasty was thus built at the crossroads of Polynesian traditions and Western influences, which would be its strength… but also its weaknesses.
2. Pomare I (Tu): the founder of the kingdom of Tahiti

Pomare I officially reigned from 1791 to 1803 , but his influence began well before. He was the first to permanently unify Tahiti under a centralized authority.
His major works
-
- Political unification : he consolidates his power over Tahiti and extends his influence over Moorea and the neighboring islands.
- Alliance with the missionaries : it gradually adopted Western codes, allowing the introduction of writing, new laws and the Christian religion.
- Structuring of royal power : it lays the foundations for a kingdom recognized by Europeans.
The love of the people
The figure of Pomare I is ambivalent: respected for his strength and authority, sometimes feared for his methods, but recognized as the one who gave Tahiti an unprecedented political unity.
Educational Box – The Role of the Rebels of Bounty in the accession of Pomare I
When the rebels of Bounty They settled in Tahiti in 1789, the island was in the midst of a war between major chiefdoms.
Pomare (then called Tu) is not the most powerful leader: he is even in difficulty against the Teva, the dominant force in the south.
The mutineers, however, will change his destiny.
1. Decisive military aid
The rebels bring to Pomare:
- firearms (muskets, pistols, powder);
- trained men to the European struggle;
- technical skills (weapons repair, construction, fortifications).
In Tahiti, at the end of the 18th century, a few firearms were enough to reverse the balance of power.
Pomare suddenly becomes the best-equipped chief on the island.
2. A strategic alliance
The mutineers are looking for:
- protected ;
- land ;
- women ;
- social status .
Pomare offers them all of this. In exchange, they become his armed , loyal, and feared guard .
3. The turning point against the Teva
With the mutineers, Pomare wins several key battles against the Teva.
The chiefs of the other districts, impressed by this new military power, gradually recognized its authority.
Without the mutineers of the Bounty , Pomare would probably never have been able to establish himself as supreme leader.
4. The birth of the Pomare dynasty
Between 1791 and 1792, Pomare consolidated his power over the northern and central districts.
When the missionaries arrived in 1797, they already considered it the sovereign of Tahiti .
The mutineers therefore played a role founder in the emergence of the future Kingdom of Tahiti .
To remember
- The mutineers of Bounty have provided poor , men , “technical” detectors. et military prestige .
- They enabled Pomare to defeat his rivals, notably the Teva.
- Their support was determinant in the advent of Pomare I and of the Pomare dynasty.

Pomare IV is often described as a mother of the people . Her strength, determination, and devotion to the islands have earned her lasting admiration. She embodies resilience , dignity , and the protection of Tahitian culture.
6. Pomare V: the last king and the end of the kingdom

Pomare V ( reigned 1877-1880 ) was the last sovereign of the dynasty. His reign marked the definitive transition to the status of French protectorate and then colony.
