Papeete Town Hall

The origins

Papeete City Hall was founded in the 19th century, when Tahiti was still an independent kingdom. It was built on its current site, not far from Rue Paul Gauguin. This location was chosen for its strategic importance and centrality, reflecting the administrative and symbolic role the city hall would play in the life of the capital of French Polynesia.

The Colonial Era

During World War II, the city hall was the site of numerous events. It served as headquarters for the Allied forces and was damaged by bombing raids. The Independence and modernity

Current Role

The town hall in its current state was inaugurated on May 16, 1990. Its architecture, inspired by the palace of Queen Pomare IV, is the work of architect Rodolphe Weinmann. Today, in addition to managing municipal affairs and public services, it organizes cultural events and promotes Polynesian identity.
