From good surprises to discover on the island of Moorea, the 3 Pinus hike is a sensational ballad. It will delight lovers of nature, spectacular panoramas andadventure in the heart of the mountain. This trail offers a immersion in the luxurious vegetation of the island, offering a shaded ascent. It will take you to meet three majestic pines, and offers stunning views across the whole of Moorea. An exceptional panorama
The Three Pines Hike is an approximately 2-hour round -trip hike . However, you should allow more time , as you can easily spend a long time at the summit admiring the panoramic views. It takes its name from the three pine trees you'll encounter upon reaching the highest point of the trail . This hike is an excellent way to discover the island's natural diversity , far from the touristy beaches. The starting point is at the Moorea Belvedere , an area where tropical vegetation flourishes and the scenery is simply spectacular . From the very first steps, you're immersed in a lush jungle , where giant trees , colorful flowers , and exotic birds blend harmoniously.

Departure and access
If you're driving to the starting point of this walk, you'll need to park in the lot located at the second-to-last hairpin bend before reaching the Belvedere viewpoint . The upper platform is reserved for those staying no more than 15 minutes to take photos or for tour operators . And for those forgetful souls who might have left drinks and snacks behind , there's a stand on site where you can stock up on cakes and local fruit pieces (fresh or dried), fresh fruit juice, and more. I tried the pineapple cake — absolutely delicious!
An accessible and pleasant path
The 3 Pinus hike is suitable for all walker profiles. The path is well marked, with some gradual climbsMore without major obstacles, what makes it accessible to most hikers. Even those without extensive mountain hiking experience will find something to suit them. However, it is recommended to wear suitable shoes, because the ground may be muddy, especially after rain. In addition, thehumidity of the rainforest can make the course sliding in places. The path winds between rocks et tree roots and a few freshwater basins in which we can refresh a cas de strong heat.
Meeting the Three Pines
The main objective of this hike is to reach the summit where the three pines stand , imposing trees that dominate the valley. These pines, called Pinus radiata , are quite rare in the region and were planted by humans at the beginning of the 20th century . Their monumental size contrasts sharply with the surrounding tropical vegetation. Indeed, their slender trunks rise majestically above the other plant species. Their striking appearance , with long, thin needles , gives this place an almost otherworldly feel . Furthermore, a swing installed between two of the three pines is a welcome sight for taking a photo to immortalize your visit to this majestic spot.
The arrival at the summit
Once you reach the shade of these ancient trees, you can enjoy a relaxing moment observing the landscape stretching before and behind you . From here, the view of all of Moorea is spectacular . Before you, the sacred Mount Rotui stands for posterity, faithfully framed by the magnificent bays of Opunohu and Cook . Behind, the rugged mountains and sheer cliffs add an impressive and breathtaking dimension to the place. The experience is all the more striking because of the feeling of being in a timeless place , both close to nature and completely cut off from the outside world.
A journey to the heart of Moorea's biodiversity
Beyond the pines, this hike also allows you to observe a great diversity of flora and fauna. You will cross a dense tropical forest, populated by endemic plants from Polynesia, such as giant tree ferns, wild orchids and fruit trees like map, famous chestnut trees from Polynesia. This luxurious vegetation is the home of a multitude of birds, including the legendary “long-billed reed warbler". This little bird endemic of the island of Moorea is unfortunately endangered. If you have a network, you will however be able to download his song thanks to a QR Code visible on a panel. You can then try tohear, or better, thesee. Because throughout the climb, panels inform you about the names of trees or birds. However, des local guides, often enthusiasts by their island, can inform you about thehistory of the region and on the wildlife and the flore which inhabit this humid forest. Do not hesitate to call on them.

Therefore, during the rainy season , from November to April, the trail can be muddy and slippery . So be sure to check the weather forecast before setting out.
