Founded in 1974, the Museum of Tahiti and the Islands has the mission of protecting and promote le cultural heritageof French Polynesia. I must also point out that the 70s scored a net rincreased interest for local culture. This is how the Culture House and the Tahitian Academy were born at the same time. Located at the Fishermen's Point, near the mouth of the river Punaruu, the museum occupies a plot of land of nearly 4 hectares : , offering a amazing views on the lagoon of Tahiti and theisland of moorea.

Personally, I particularly appreciated the large wooden tikis, the old canoes, and all paintings et screens which explain in detail the origins of the settlement of Polynesia and the important dates who have marked its history. We also learn what it was like organized society before the arrival of Europeans.

The Museum of Tahiti and the Islands is open everyday, except Monday, between 8h et 16 hrs le Tuesday and between 9h et 17 hrs the other days. The entrance is for free for young people under 18, the students and the Handicapped. Rates for adults and children are 1 CFP et 500 CFP respectively.
