Withdrawing cash in French Polynesia is generally straightforward on the main islands , but it can quickly become complicated in the more remote archipelagos where ATMs are scarce or nonexistent. This guide is designed to help travelers anticipate their cash needs by clearly listing which islands have ATMs , which don't, and the alternative solutions available locally.
Cash withdrawals at bank counters are not possible for visitors without a local account. The only realistic options are ATMs , supermarkets offering cashback , hotels and guesthouses providing cash advances , or certain local shops . This guide will help you plan your itinerary with peace of mind, whether you're traveling in the Society Islands, the Tuamotu Archipelago, the Marquesas Islands, the Gambier Islands, or the Austral Islands.
Things to know about ATMs
The presence of a ATM (Automated Teller Machine)
does not always guarantee the possibility of withdrawing money.
In French Polynesia, some ATMs may be vides,
out of order or
breakdown, especially after a weekend, an event
or a busy tourist area. An ATM indicates the presence of a withdrawal point.
but not that it is operational when you need it.

Ultimately
This guide gathers all the essential information on where to withdraw cash in the five archipelagos of French Polynesia. ATMs are widely available in the Society Islands, less common in the Tuamotu Islands, present only on two islands in the Marquesas, and limited to a few municipalities in the Gambier and Austral Islands.
For islands and atolls without ATMs, it is essential to bring enough cash before departure, ideally in Tahiti or on an island with ATMs. Alternatives (hotels, guesthouses, shops) are possible but never guaranteed, especially in remote areas.
Thanks to the clickable icons 📍, you can instantly check the exact location of each ATM and plan your withdrawals based on your itinerary. A well-prepared trip is a stress-free trip. And in Polynesia, that often starts with having some cash in your wallet.
Finally, if you withdrew money from a location not listed here, please let me know in the comments section at the bottom of this page. Mauruuru 😉
