Vaipahi Water Gardens Great Loop Hike

A nature immersion in the heart of Tahiti

Located in Mataiea, on the south coast of Tahiti, the Vaipahi Water Gardens are home to one of the most accessible and varied hikes on the island: the Grande Boucle (Great Loop). This approximately 5 km trail offers a succession of tropical landscapes , shaded areas , more challenging sections , spectacular panoramas , and moments of absolute tranquility in the heart of the forest.

Before entering the garden, visitors find a small refreshment area offering local products: bananas, breadfruit chips, and cold drinks, including a turmeric-ginger lemonade, my personal favorite. A perfect way to start the day before setting off on the trail.

A demanding but short start

After walking about fifty meters through the garden, the sign for the three circuits appears: short loop, medium loop, and long loop. The long loop begins immediately with a series of steep stairs , typical of Tahitian hikes. This section requires caution , especially in wet weather, as the steps can be slippery. It is advisable to climb slowly , take breaks , and not underestimate this first section.

A rope is installed on certain sections to secure the ascent. This section is the most physically demanding part of the entire hike; once you get past it, the rest of the route becomes significantly easier.

In this first section, after about 160 meters of walking, a sign allows you to choose between the west and east trails (it was broken and on the ground the day I did this hike). Personally, I think it's better to head west , so to the left , in order to finish the hike at the Panorama , the most beautiful viewpoint on the route.

The forest

Pine trees, shade, coolness and regularity

After the initial climb, the trail widens and the slope eases. The hike then enters a stunning pine forest, almost unexpected in Polynesia. The ground is covered in pine needles, making walking pleasant during the dry season. However, when the ground is wet, these needles can become slippery.

This section is entirely shaded , ideal for resting. The path is wide , well-marked , and presents no particular difficulties . Progress is easy and at a steady pace.

The hike then continues through several vegetated areas where, among other things, you can observe :

Miconia

An invasive shrub with large green leaves on top and mauve underneath. It rapidly colonizes natural areas and threatens local species.

The Gabonese tulip tree

Called "pispis" in Tahiti, it illuminates the forest with its red flowers. Magnificent, but also invasive.

The mushrooms

Some mushrooms appear in damp areas.

A biodiversity that surpasses what we imagine

These elements demonstrate the site's botanical diversity and the delicate balance between native and invasive species. But these are just a few examples, as many other species  are present. Connoisseurs will be delighted.

Openings onto the lagoon and the mountains

At several points, the forest opens up, revealing views of:

    • the turquoise lagoon of Mataiea
    • the mountains of Tahiti
    • the ocean in the distance

These natural windows offer visual respites and remind us of the proximity of the coastline despite being immersed in the forest.

Safety and walking conditions

The Grande Boucle is a popular trail , which enhances safety. Cell phone coverage is available along almost the entire route, except for a short section near the summit. I should mention that I'm a Vodafone customer . The path is wide and well-marked , with a few roots towards the end and some pine cones that can roll underfoot.

It is recommended:

    • check the weather before leaving
    • to avoid rainy days
    • to walk in pairs when possible
    • to remain attentive on the descents, especially towards the end of the hike

A moment suspended in the forest

The gradual climb to higher ground offers a calm , silent environment , perfect for contemplation. The pine forest creates a unique, almost meditative atmosphere. Time seems to slow down, and the hike becomes a respite where you reconnect with nature , far from the noise and pace of everyday life.

The Panorama: the highest point of the loop

At approximately 4,3 km, a sign indicates two directions: exit  or panorama  . Taking the left fork leads to a small, open-sided shelter. This viewpoint offers a spectacular view of the mountains, the lagoon, and the shades of blue and green that make up the Mataiea landscape.

This is one of the most beautiful viewpoints on the south coast of Tahiti. An ideal place to take a break, have a drink of water, eat a piece of fruit, or simply enjoy the scenery.

The descent: stream, bridge and return to the garden

After the viewpoint, you need to backtrack a few meters to continue the descent. The path begins with some roots and steps equipped with ropes . It then follows a small, clear stream, crossed by a fairly wide bridge. This section offers a welcome respite from the heat before reaching the junction of the two trails (west and east).

The end of the loop rejoins the path taken at the start, before descending the initial stairs to return to the garden.

A touch of local life

Even deep in the forest, you sometimes come across chickens and roosters , ubiquitous in Polynesia. And as a bonus, I was lucky enough to observe a pair of green pigeons in flight. They are easy to recognize thanks to their bright colors and perfectly straight flight path . A little glimpse of local life that reminds us that Tahitian nature is still inhabited.

Ultimately

The Vaipahi Water Gardens Grand Loop is an ideal route for discovering Tahiti in a different way. Accessible , varied , shaded , and punctuated by viewpoints , it is suitable for all levels. The only truly strenuous section is the start , but it is short and well-secured.

With contrasting landscapes, peaceful atmosphere, Its cool zones, Its panoramas and its final stream, it's a essential hike from the south coast.
And before complete the day with a meal at the restaurant O Tumu MapeLocated very close to the site, one can go and soak in healing and restorative waters from the Vaima's Source, a brief moment of coolness that perfectly extends the hike.

Finally, as always, we would love to read your impressions of this hike in the comments section at the bottom of this article. Get typing! 😉
