Public transport revolution in Tahiti: everything you need to know about the new Tere Tahiti buses, fares and services

Since May 26, 2025, Tahiti is experiencing a major transformation of its public transport network. Supported by the government of French Polynesia and Tere Tahiti operator, this reform aims to make the bus more accessible, more modern et more attractive for residents and visitors alike. Between simplified pricing, reinforced lines, innovative mobile applications and new services, Here is a complete overview of this mobility revolution.

Single, simplified pricing for all journeys

One of the most significant changes is the establishment of a single rate of 150 F CFP for all journeys, regardless of the distance traveled. This rate only applies to tickets purchased in advance, online, in-store or via the mobile app. For on-board purchases, the price is set at 200 F CFP, in order to encourage advance sales and make it easier to board buses.

Detailed prices:

  • Advance ticket : 150 F CFP

  • Ticket on board : 200 F CFP

  • Book of 10 tickets : 1 F CFP (i.e. 100 F per ticket)

  • Monthly youth subscription (under 26) : 1 F CFP

  • 3-day Discovery Pass (visitors) : 1 F CFP

  • free : children under 3 years old, students, people with disabilities or matahiapo (people at least 62 years old after creating a file at the Tere Tahiti agency).

This tariff simplification replaces a complex grid of 70 different prices, in force since 2012. It allows a significant reduction the cost of long journeys, particularly between the Peninsula and Papeete, where the price is divided by three.

A mobile application for smart mobility

Another major innovation: the launch of the application Tere Tahiti Mobilities, available since the end of May. It offers a range of features designed to make users' lives easier:

  • Buy tickets online

  • Route planning

  • Real-time bus tracking on an interactive map

  • Information on timetables and disruptions

  • Display of waiting times at main stops via digital terminals

This application replaces the old version, which was considered obsolete and had been abandoned for several years. It comes with a modernized website, accessible on all devices, for a smooth and intuitive experience. You will find at the bottom of this article the links to download this application on Android and iPhone.

Strengthening lines and improving service

To address the saturation of certain lines during peak hours, the government has launched a targeted network strengthening from May 19, 2025. Three major lines now benefit from 10 additional round trips per day :

  • Line 20 : Papeete – Taravao (west side)

  • Line 21 : Papeete – Taravao (east side)

  • Line 31 : Papeete – Papenoo

These journeys are concentrated on the busiest time slots, in order to reduce waiting times and improve passenger comfort. In return, some little-used services have been reduced to optimize resources.

Towards a more reliable and sustainable network

The reform is part of a global strategy of sustainable mobility and fight against road congestionIn French Polynesia, transportation is the second largest household expense. By making the bus more affordable and convenient, authorities hope to encourage modal shift from car to public transport.

Displayed objectives:

  • Reducing inequalities in access to transport

  • Relieve congestion on major urban roads

  • Improve air quality and limit environmental impact

  • Offer a credible alternative to the individual car

What's next? New buses and equipment to come

The reform does not stop there. A second phase is planned for mid-2026, with the arrival of 18 new buses on the network. These vehicles will increase the transport capacity of 5 additional places per day, while improving comfort and punctuality.

The Minister of Major Works, Jordy Chan, also mentioned the possibility of creating new bus shelters and to extend the digital terminals as needed. The objective is clear: restore confidence in the network and make the bus a mode of transport of choice.

A service designed for residents and tourists

With 3-day discovery pass for 1 CFP francs, visitors can now explore Tahiti by bus at a lower cost. This tourism product is added to monthly subscriptions et ticket books, for an offer adapted to all profiles.

Outlying areas, often poorly served, also benefit from this reform, with fairer fares and extended timetables. As a result, this is a important step forward for families and travailleurs living far from urban centers.
