The Tu Marama promenade

A vast project

Originally named the Jacques Chirac Promenade, the Tu Marama Promenade was inaugurated with great fanfare on December 16, 2020. The long-standing desire of our leaders to make Papeete a city open to the ocean is at the heart of its construction. To'ata Square, Vaiete Square, and Bougainville Park, for example, are part of this vast project.

Respect for traditional Polynesian constructions

Stone wall seating surrounds the complex, inspired by ancient paepae, while pandanus roofs evoke traditional Polynesian constructions. I should point out that paepae were once small amphitheaters made of low stone walls. In the middle, on a sand stage, Polynesians came to watch shows, often traditional dances. On either side of the 20-meter double canoe that sits on the promenade are two bar-restaurants very popular with locals: the Moana and the Meherio. Both will be the subject of a dedicated article.

Relaxation, walking and sports

This space of promenade and relaxation has quickly become a popular spot, both for locals and tourists. People flock there to stroll, daydream while contemplating Moorea, or go jogging. This green lung in the heart of the city is a real breath of fresh air.

Cruise terminal opening imminent

We are all now eagerly awaiting the upcoming opening of the cruise terminal, as pedestrians will finally be able to take possession of the entire area.

Thank you for this report with its heavenly landscapes. It's raining where I live and the snow is melting. So this window onto Tahiti is welcome. Plus, it comes with a very friendly guide.
